Hartmannfabrik Chemnitz

Temporary, modular, circular – shaping spaces with System 180

For the new information and visitor centre on the site of the former Hartmann Factory in Chemnitz – a central venue of the European Capital of Culture 2025 – Atelier n.4 from Flöha developed a temporary spatial concept that brings together architecture, functionality, and sustainability.

The modular furniture system by System 180 was specifically chosen by Atelier n.4 to meet the demands of temporary use. Beyond its adaptable furniture, the system stood out for its ability to support stable, freestanding structures up to six metres high – a technical challenge our construction system handles with ease.

All components can be fully dismantled, reconfigured, or returned to the material cycle. This makes the project not only a technical but also an ecological statement: a testament to responsible design and the consistent application of circular design principles.

System 180 combines a strong aesthetic quality with technically advanced modularity.

From the very beginning of the design process, we were looking for a system that would allow both modular furniture for a variety of use cases and a construction kit for stable room structures up to 6 meters in height. With System 180, this vision became reality. The 6-meter-high partition elements in particular posed a structural challenge that could not be solved with other modular systems.

The technical parameters of the System 180 components are highly refined, stable, extremely durable, and consistently modular. In terms of sustainable design, the system is exemplary: all components can be disassembled, reconfigured into new elements, or—if worn—returned to the material cycle in line with cradle-to-cradle principles.

This was a key factor for the temporary use of the space as an information and visitor center.”

Barbara Graupner, Dipl. Designer (FH), Atelier n.4
