The Lean Factory at the Berlin University of Applied Sciences and Technology (HTW Berlin) is an innovative learning and development space that provides students with hands-on insights into modern production and problem-solving processes. The space combines a realistic assembly line with digitally networked production systems and a design thinking approach, making Lean Management, Industry 4.0 and agile process methods tangible and experiential.
At its core is a flexible spatial concept based on modular and mobile System 180 furniture. This allows workshop zones, focus areas or collaborative spaces to be created quickly and adapted situationally to the specific requirements of each teaching and learning phase. In this way, the space itself becomes part of the didactic concept, supporting both analytical work and creative experimentation.
The Lean Factory connects physical assembly stations via RFID and real-time IT systems, visualizes key performance indicators and material flows, and integrates automated manufacturing processes as well as collaborative robotics. This enables students to experience Industry 4.0 technologies directly within their practical context.
Working in multidisciplinary teams, students move iteratively through project phases such as observation, understanding, ideation and prototyping. This agile way of working, combined with lean principles, fosters problem-solving and innovation skills that are essential for the working world of tomorrow.
With modular, mobile System 180 solutions, spatial design becomes dynamic, adaptable and immediately functional—creating an interdisciplinary learning environment that seamlessly connects creative collaboration with hands-on production.
